Azerbaijan GP Summary
This track offers a unique blend of wide, open sections and tight, twisty corners. The extremely long main straight along Baku’s shoreline is ideal for slipstreaming, often allowing cars to run three abreast into Turn 1, giving it an IndyCar-like feel at times. From there, the circuit winds through the city’s narrow old town, with dramatic turns around Baku’s medieval city walls. Teams face a tough decision: optimize downforce for the tight corners or reduce drag to maximize speed on the straight.

Azerbaijan GP Race Track
Sector 1
Sector 1 of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix track, located in Baku, is a thrilling part of the Baku City Circuit. This sector covers the early portion of the track and offers some unique characteristics:
Start-Finish Straight (Turn 1):
The sector begins with the long, wide start-finish straight, which is one of the longest straights in Formula 1. Cars reach incredibly high speeds here, making it one of the key overtaking spots on the track.
Turn 1 is a sharp 90-degree left-hand corner, which forces the drivers to significantly reduce speed after the high-speed straight, creating a heavy braking zone. It's a prime location for overtakes but can also be tricky if drivers misjudge their braking.
Turns 2-3:
After Turn 1, there is a short burst of acceleration before hitting Turn 2, another 90-degree left-hander. It leads into another straight section, where drivers try to position themselves for better speed and possible overtaking.
Turn 3 is the first right-hand corner on the track, which is another tight 90-degree bend. It is narrower here, with walls close on either side, adding to the challenge of the urban circuit.
Tight Street Circuit Feel:
Sector 1 introduces the drivers to the tight street circuit feel of Baku, with barriers close to the track, making precision crucial.
The buildings and structures around the track add a sense of speed and danger, as the sector's narrow streets mean that mistakes can be costly.
Critical for Race Start:
This sector is especially important at the start of the race, as the long straight and heavy braking zones offer multiple overtaking opportunities and the potential for incidents.
In summary, Sector 1 of the Azerbaijan F1 track is defined by high-speed straights, sharp 90-degree corners, and the challenges of a narrow street circuit, all combining to create a dynamic and intense racing environment.

Sector 2
Turns 4-7
Sector 2 begins with a continuation of the tight street circuit feel. After exiting Turn 3, drivers navigate Turn 4, another 90-degree right-hander.
Turns 5 and 6 form a chicane, a set of quick, sharp left-right corners that require precision and smooth handling. This section is tricky as it's relatively narrow, leaving little room for error.
Turn 7 is a tight left-hand corner leading into the most technical part of the circuit. The proximity of the walls here makes it especially demanding, testing the drivers' ability to manage traction and brake effectively.
The Castle Section (Turns 8-12)
The most iconic part of Sector 2 and the entire Baku City Circuit is the Castle Section, starting at Turn 8. This part of the track winds through the historic Old City of Baku, with the walls of the medieval city looming just inches away.
Turns 8, 9, and 10 are narrow, uphill, and feature a series of sharp, slow corners, demanding absolute precision from the drivers.
Turn 11 is a sweeping left-hander that leads into Turn 12, another tight left. The elevation change and narrowness make overtaking here virtually impossible, and any mistake can result in significant damage, as there’s no room to recover.
Drivers focus on clean, fast exits from this section, as it sets them up for the faster part of the circuit.
High-Risk, High-Reward Section
Sector 2 is all about precision and control. It tests the drivers' technical skills, especially through the Castle Section, which is notorious for accidents due to its narrowness and lack of runoff areas.
This part of the circuit isn’t ideal for overtaking but is crucial for lap time, as losing momentum through these turns can cost valuable seconds.

Corner 8-11
Sector 3
Turns 13-16:
After the tight Castle Section, Sector 3 opens up a bit. It begins with Turn 13, a fast, sweeping left-hander followed by Turn 14, a slight right. These corners are more open and taken at higher speeds than the previous section, allowing drivers to regain their rhythm and push the throttle more.
Turn 15 is a more challenging downhill left-hand corner, one of the most dangerous on the track due to its off-camber design. Drivers need to be careful here, as locking up or missing the apex can send them into the barriers.
Turn 16 is a sharp left-hander leading onto one of the longest and fastest straight sections in Formula 1. Precision in Turn 16 is critical, as a good exit is needed to maximize speed down the long straight.
Long Back Straight (Turns 17-20):
After Turn 16, the track flows into a very fast and slightly curving straight section that includes the flat-out Turns 17, 18, 19, and 20.
These corners are taken at full speed and barely feel like corners due to the flat-out nature. This part of the track is all about maximizing top speed and ensuring the car has minimal drag.
The long straight here makes Sector 3 the fastest part of the Baku City Circuit. Drivers can reach speeds of up to 350 km/h (217 mph), making it a critical area for overtaking and setting up for the next lap.
High-Speed, Overtaking Opportunity:
Sector 3 is a stark contrast to Sector 2’s tight technical sections. The high-speed straight and sweeping corners offer plenty of overtaking opportunities, especially with DRS assistance down the long straight.
Drivers need a well-balanced car to maximize both top speed and stability through the fast corners. Any slipstream battles or DRS moves often take place in this sector.
Final Corner Setup:
Sector 3 leads into the start-finish straight, with drivers trying to carry as much speed as possible through the final corners to set themselves up for a fast lap or overtaking maneuver heading into the next lap's Turn 1.
