
The Circuit

If Spa is the university of Formula 1, the Hungaroring is the entrance exam nobody revises for. Four and a bit kilometres, fourteen corners, no straights worth the name, and a lap that never lets you breathe. Its 4.381 km, 14-corner layout is famously twisty and slow, often described as "Monaco without the walls" for its absence of overtaking opportunities. That comparison gets trotted out every year and it has always been a little unfair. But arriving here a week after the Ardennes, with the field still nursing bruises from the energy war at Spa, it has never felt more apt.
Here's the thing that makes Hungary fascinating in 2026, and it's the exact mirror image of what we've just watched in Belgium. At Spa the battery empties before the straight does. At the Hungaroring, you cannot empty the battery at all. Every corner is a braking event, harvesting is relentless, and the deployment opportunities are so short that the state of charge barely moves. The 2026 power unit was designed around tactical energy management across a lap. At this circuit, there is nothing to manage. Everyone arrives at every corner with a full store and nowhere useful to spend it.

Which brings us to the uncomfortable part. If nobody is energy limited, the Overtake Mode boost stops being a differentiator. You deploy, your rival deploys, and the gap between you stays exactly where it was. It's the same problem we identified at Monaco, and the same reason we spent that Sunday afternoon watching a procession with lovely scenery. The Hungaroring at least gives you a proper straight and a proper braking zone at the end of it, so the situation isn't hopeless. But anyone expecting the new regulations to magically fix Hungary is going to be disappointed.
What might actually help is the car. The 2026 machines are 200mm shorter in the wheelbase, 100mm narrower and 30kg lighter than the ground-effect monsters that have been squeezing round here for the last four years, and this is the sort of circuit where those numbers turn into real lap time and real overtaking. The Hungaroring has been too small for the cars for a decade. It isn't any more.
Sector 1: Turns 1 to 4
The longest straight at the Hungaroring is the start-finish straight between Turn 14 and Turn 1, at 792 metres. That's your lot. Everything that happens on Sunday, in terms of genuine wheel-to-wheel racing, happens on that stretch of road and in the braking zone at the end of it.
Turn 1 is a heavy-braking downhill right-hander reached at over 300 km/h, the only genuine overtaking opportunity on the lap, with a wide entry that rewards late-apex commitment. Miss the apex and you ruin the run through Turn 2. That last part is the bit people forget. Turn 1 at the Hungaroring is a trap dressed up as an opportunity. It's wide, it's downhill, and it invites you to throw the car in from a country mile back. Do that and you'll make the pass, then watch the bloke you just overtook sail straight back past you at Turn 2 because you've butchered your exit and he hasn't.

The lighter, narrower 2026 car changes the arithmetic here. Less mass means a shorter braking distance, which means a car can go deeper without compromising the rotation as badly. The narrower track width means two cars genuinely fit side by side through the entry rather than one of them being shoved onto the marbles. I'd expect more successful moves at Turn 1 this year, and more of them sticking through Turn 2.
Turn 2 is a long, patient right that leads into the short blast to Turn 3, and then comes the corner that defines your entire first sector. Turn 4 is a blind, uphill left-hander cresting at the highest point of the lap. Drivers commit before seeing the apex, and a poor exit compromises the downhill run through Turns 5 and 6. It's a lovely corner and a horrible one. You turn in on faith, the car goes light over the crest, and with the reduced downforce of the 2026 generation that lightness is going to be far more pronounced than anything the drivers have felt here in recent years. This is where the aero cut bites in Sector 1, and it's where I'd expect to see the biggest spread between the confident and the cautious in qualifying.
The talking point for this sector is traction, and specifically rear tyre traction on a hot surface. Hungary in late July is brutal. Track temperatures routinely climb past 50 degrees and the surface is low grip and dusty at the start of the weekend before it rubbers in. Get greedy with the throttle out of Turn 2 and Turn 3 on a hot afternoon and the rears go off a cliff. Thermal degradation, not wear, is what kills you here.
Sector 2: Turns 5 to 11
This is the karting section, and it's where the Hungaroring earns its reputation. A relentless chain of medium and low speed corners with no time to reset the car between them, running downhill from the crest at Turn 4 and then twisting back through the infield. There's no hero corner. There's just rhythm.
Teams turn up here with something close to Monaco levels of downforce for exactly this reason, and the 2026 cars, which have less downforce available in the first place, are going to be trimmed as far towards maximum as the regulations allow. Watch the rear wings this weekend. They'll be the biggest of the year so far.
The Turn 6 and 7 chicane is the centrepiece, a quick left-right that demands a car with a settled platform and a driver willing to attack the kerbs. The 2026 cars are twitchier over kerbs than their predecessors because there's less aero load pinning them down, and I fully expect somebody to launch themselves into the barrier here across the weekend. Then it flows through the long right of Turn 8 and the sweeps of 9, 10 and 11, all of them medium speed, all of them loading the same tyres in the same direction for what feels like an eternity.

This is where the tyre management story is written. The Hungaroring is not a circuit with one dominant degradation mode. It attacks the rears out of the slow corners with traction demand and it attacks the fronts through the sustained medium-speed loading of the middle sector, and it does both while the track temperature sits somewhere between an oven and a pizza stone. There is no respite. On a lap of Spa you get a straight to cool the tyres. Here you get nothing, and the tyre surface temperature just climbs and climbs across a stint until the driver is sliding around and the engineer is on the radio telling him something he already knows.
Track familiarity is total, incidentally. Everyone has driven this place since karts, the teams have decades of data, and the junior categories run here every year. Nobody is finding time in learning the circuit. They're finding it in set-up, in tyre management, and in the small handful of corners where the reduced 2026 downforce turns a formality back into a question.
Sector 3: Turns 12 to 14
Out of the infield and into the final stretch, where the lap finally opens up a fraction. There's a short straight between Turns 11 and 12 that gives the drivers their only real breather of the middle of the lap, and then it's the run through the final complex.
Turn 12 and 13 set you up for the corner that actually matters, which is the last one. The final corner is a sweeping right-hander where grip is at a premium and cars often have moments of oversteer. Everything about your race depends on it. Get a clean, patient exit from the last turn and you carry momentum down that 792-metre straight, you're a threat into Turn 1, and if you're being chased you have a fighting chance of defending. Overdrive it, get the rear loose, and you've given away the only overtaking spot on the circuit before you've even reached it.
It is, in other words, exactly the same equation as Monaco's Anthony Noghes, and exactly the same equation as Barcelona's final corner. The last corner before the main straight is where the race is decided, and on a circuit where passing is this hard, it's where a driver's discipline late in a stint on tired rubber is worth more than any amount of one-lap pace.

What decides Sunday
Qualifying. Let's not pretend otherwise. The relentless sequence of medium-speed corners and high summer temperatures make qualifying decisive and tyre management critical to race strategy. Track position at the Hungaroring has always been worth more than pace, and while the smaller 2026 cars should improve the racing, they haven't rebuilt the circuit.
Beyond that, three things. Thermal degradation on a hot Sunday, and the discipline to nurse a set through a long stint rather than chase a lap time you'll pay for ten laps later. The undercut, which is powerful here because the pit loss is modest and clean air is worth a fortune. And the start, because at a track where overtaking is this scarce, the run to Turn 1 from the grid is the single biggest opportunity of the entire afternoon.
The energy game that dominated Spa simply doesn't exist here, and that's the honest read on the weekend. The 2026 power unit's cleverest trick, the tactical spending of a limited electrical store, is neutered at a circuit that hands you a full battery every few seconds. What's left is a chassis contest on a hot, low-grip, unforgiving little track that has been beyond the size of a Formula 1 car for years and finally, mercifully, isn't. That alone is worth turning up for.
