
The Circuit

Seven kilometres. Forty-four laps. The longest circuit on the calendar and, by common consent in the paddock, the greatest. They call Spa the university of Formula 1 and they're not being poetic about it. This place examines everything. Aerodynamic efficiency, power unit strength, tyre management, driver bravery, and now, in 2026, a brand new subject on the syllabus that nobody has fully mastered yet: energy management.
Which brings us to the headline of the weekend. The FIA has published the official straight mode activation map for Spa-Francorchamps, revealing five separate sections where drivers will be permitted to activate the low-drag aerodynamic configuration. The same five-zone layout was used at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, where the new regulations made their competitive debut. That should tell you everything. The FIA has looked at Spa, looked at the 2026 power unit, and concluded that without an unusual amount of drag relief the cars would simply run out of electrical energy before the end of the straights.

The battery problem, and why five zones exist
Let's be blunt about the engineering here, because it's the story of the race.
The 2026 power unit runs a roughly 50/50 split between the combustion engine and the electrical side, with the MGU-K uprated to 350kW and a 9MJ per lap recovery cap. That's a lot of electrical power to deploy and, crucially, a lot of energy you have to find from somewhere. You recover it under braking. And Spa, magnificent as it is, barely brakes.
Look at the lap. Genuinely heavy braking events? La Source. Les Combes. The Bus Stop. That's about it. The rest is a sustained, full-throttle assault through the Ardennes forest where the car is either accelerating or holding a huge lateral load. The main concerns focus on energy management in the first and third sectors, which feature few heavy braking zones, and on the iconic stretch from Eau Rouge to the end of Kemmel, where teams risk excessive energy clipping that could drastically reduce speeds.
Clipping is the word to learn this weekend. It's what happens when the battery empties before the straight does. The deployment cuts, the driver is left with the combustion engine alone, and because that engine is now down at around 400kW rather than the 550kW of the old regulations, the car simply stops accelerating. You've seen the telemetry trace before. A lovely rising line, then a flat, embarrassed plateau while everything with charge left sails past. At the end of Kemmel, running out of juice is not a minor inconvenience. It's the difference between defending a position and being a moving chicane.
The five Straight Mode zones are the FIA's answer. Flatten the wings, cut the drag, and you need less energy to hold speed. It's an efficiency fix disguised as a performance one. Despite the regulatory adjustments introduced from the Miami Grand Prix onwards, which significantly improved energy management compared to the opening rounds, the latest hybrid engines still face a particularly difficult task on a circuit where drivers spend an extraordinary amount of time at full throttle.
Anyone who watched Melbourne knows how this can go. Qualifying was heavily influenced by energy management, the opening laps featured frequent position changes and aggressive overtaking, and observers described a yo-yo effect, with some comparing it to a game of Mario Kart because of the repeated swings in position. Chaotic, occasionally farcical, and undeniably entertaining. Spa is Melbourne's problem with twice the straights and a great deal more consequence.
Sector 1: La Source, Eau Rouge and the Kemmel Straight
Two of the five zones live here, and they're the two everybody will be talking about.
The opening zone begins immediately after La Source and continues along the start-finish straight until the approach to Eau Rouge, allowing drivers to maximise acceleration before one of Formula 1's most iconic corners. So you crawl out of the La Source hairpin in first gear, wings flatten, and you're already on the deployment clock before you reach the bottom of the hill. La Source itself is a slow, awkward right-hander that gives you almost nothing back. The traction demand is savage, the exit is compromised by the camber, and with the torque of the 2026 power unit going through the rear tyres it's the single biggest wheelspin risk on the lap. Get it wrong on lap one, in the middle of a twenty-car scrum, and you've lost five places before Eau Rouge.

Then the plunge. Eau Rouge and Raidillon, the corner that needs no introduction, taken flat with the car compressing hard at the bottom of the dip and going light over the crest. In a 2025 car this was quick but comfortable. In a 2026 car, with the downforce cut back, the compression is going to feel very different indeed, and there'll be more than one driver having a moment at the top.
Following the climb through Eau Rouge and Raidillon, drivers can again activate straight mode for the entire Kemmel Straight, one of the longest full-throttle sections anywhere on the calendar. This is the money shot. Kemmel has always been the best overtaking straight in the sport and now it becomes a chess match as well. Do you deploy everything and risk clipping before Les Combes? Do you hold something back and get eaten alive by the car behind? The Overtake Mode boost, sitting on top of Straight Mode, gives an attacker a genuine weapon here. Getting a tow out of Raidillon and arriving at Les Combes with charge left when your rival hasn't is the pass of the weekend, delivered without the driver ever having to make a move.
Les Combes and Bruxelles close the sector. Heavy braking, hard rotation, and the first proper recovery opportunity of the lap. Every joule you claw back here is a joule you get to spend later.
Sector 2: The recovery sector
And now the interesting part. There are no Straight Mode zones in the middle sector at all.
The FIA has deliberately chosen not to introduce any activation areas here. Pouhon remains one of the fastest and most demanding corners in Formula 1, and tackling it without maximum aerodynamic downforce would introduce an unacceptable level of risk. Instead of deploying battery energy through this part of the lap, teams are expected to prioritise energy recovery, ensuring drivers arrive at the final sector with sufficient electrical power available.
That is a fascinating piece of regulatory design, and it changes the character of the sector completely. Sector 2 at Spa has always been the driver's sector, the flowing, committed run through Pouhon, Fagnes and Stavelot where a brave man with a well balanced car can take a tenth out of anybody. It still is. But it's now also the battery's sector. The engineers will be running harvesting strategies through here that the drivers have to work around, and if you've overspent through Kemmel, the middle sector is where you pay it back in silence while the car ahead disappears.

Pouhon deserves a word of its own. A long, fast, double-apex left taken with enormous commitment, and the corner where the 2026 downforce cut will bite hardest of anywhere on the lap. Less aero load means lower minimum speed and a car that moves around beneath you for longer than you'd like. It's also a corner that punishes the front-left tyre relentlessly. Combine that with the sustained lateral load through Fagnes and you have the tyre management story of the race.
Because Spa is not a gentle circuit on rubber. High speeds, long corners, abrasive surface and, more often than not, a track temperature that swings by fifteen degrees between sessions because the Ardennes weather does whatever it fancies. Degradation here is thermal as much as mechanical. Overheat the fronts through Pouhon on lap three of a stint and you'll be nursing a greasy car for the next fifteen. The drivers who win at Spa are the ones with the discipline to give up two tenths early to have half a second late.
Sector 3: Stavelot, Blanchimont and the Bus Stop
The final two zones live here, and they're cleverly placed. Drivers can use straight mode on the high-speed run towards Blanchimont before briefly returning the rear wing to its high-downforce configuration through the fast sequence between Turns 16 and 17. Once clear of those corners, the system can be activated again for the final sprint towards the Bus Stop chicane, creating another valuable overtaking opportunity.
That momentary reversion to Corner Mode is the detail worth watching. It's a genuine safety call, and it means the run to the Bus Stop involves the aero package cycling twice in the space of a few seconds. Whichever team has the crispest actuation, the cleanest transition between modes, will pick up lap time nobody can see on the timing screen.
Blanchimont in a 2026 car is a proper question. It has been effectively flat for years, but with reduced downforce and a wing that's been flattened for drag reduction on the approach, the commitment required at over 300kph is real again. This is where the aero cut gives the fast corners their teeth back, and I don't think anyone should complain about that.

Then the Bus Stop. Heaviest braking event of the lap, a slow chicane where the car is unsettled and the kerbs are unforgiving, and the third of the circuit's genuine overtaking zones. A late lunge here is a Spa tradition and the Overtake Mode boost down the preceding straight will make it a busier corner than ever. It's also the last recovery point before you start the whole energy cycle again out of La Source.
What decides Sunday
Three things, and only one of them is lap time.
The first is energy discipline. Whoever has built the smartest deployment map, who knows exactly when to spend and when to harvest across a seven-kilometre lap with only three real braking zones, will make passes that look effortless and defend positions that look impossible. Ferrari go into this one with a genuine advantage, because the SF-26 has consistently demonstrated excellent aerodynamic efficiency and low-drag characteristics throughout the season, and low drag is worth double at a circuit where drag costs you energy as well as speed.
The second is tyre life through Sector 2, where the fronts get cooked and the difference between a two-stop that works and one that unravels is decided in the opening laps of a stint.
The third, as ever at Spa, is the weather. Seven kilometres of Ardennes forest means it can be biblical at Malmedy and bone dry at La Source, and no amount of energy modelling survives contact with a wet Kemmel Straight.
Track familiarity counts for nothing much here. Everyone knows Spa, everyone has driven it a thousand times, and no one has ever driven it like this. Five Straight Mode zones is an admission that the sport has built a power unit which this circuit can drain in a heartbeat. Whether that produces a strategic masterpiece or a Mario Kart afternoon in the forest, we'll find out on Sunday. Either way, I wouldn't miss it.
