The Circuit

Right, Barcelona. The track everyone in pit lane knows better than their own front room. Pre-season testing has been here for the best part of two decades, every team has tens of thousands of laps logged in the simulator, and there isn't a corner on the place that hasn't been driven a million times. Add in the 2023 chicane removal, which gave us back the fast flowing final sector, and you've got a proper old-school benchmark of a circuit. 4.657 kilometres, 14 turns, and a layout that exposes any weakness in your aero balance within a handful of laps.

For 2026 it's interesting for two reasons. First, it's been rebranded the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix because Madrid has nicked the Spanish GP title for its new street circuit later in the year. Second, this is the first proper aero benchmark of the new regulations. Monaco doesn't tell you much about car balance because nobody can use it. Here, you'll find out everything you need to know about a 2026 car. 

So. Off we go.

Sector 1: Turns 1 to 4 

Lights out and it's straight into the heaviest braking zone of the lap. Turn 1 is a tight right-hander you arrive at hard on the brakes from north of 320kph, taken in second gear. The trick is trail-braking deep, letting the car rotate, and rolling straight into the Turn 2 right that follows. With the narrower 2026 chassis, you'll see drivers braver round the outside on lap one, where in years past there simply hasn't been the room. This was always the one true overtaking corner here and it stays that way. 

Then comes Turn 3. This is the one. Long, fast, off-camber, taken in a high gear at well over 250kph in qualifying, and the corner that built Barcelona's reputation as the place where car balance gets found out. Lose the front here and you understeer wide for what feels like a week, ruining the exit and bleeding into everything that follows. With the reduced front downforce of the 2026 cars, you can bet your wages this is where the new generation hurts most. Teams that nail their front-end set-up for Turn 3 will look good all year. Watch the crosswind too. It sweeps across the plateau here and can flip a car from understeer to a snap of oversteer without warning. 

Turn 4 is the quick left that closes the opening sector and tips you downhill into the middle of the lap. Get a clean exit and you carry the speed that sets up the whole technical stretch to come. Get it wrong and you spend the next five corners trying to claw the lap time back.

Sector 2: Turns 5 to 9 

The middle sector is the technical bit, where all that old test data really earns its keep. Turns 5 through 8 are a linked sequence of medium-load corners that punish anyone who can't carry minimum speed and keep the car settled between direction changes. There's no single hero corner here, it's about rhythm, and the lighter, more nimble 2026 car should in theory flow through this section better than the bulky machines we've watched lumber through it in recent years. 

It builds to Turn 9, Campsa, the highlight of the sector. A fast right-hander that crests slightly as you turn in, so you're committing to it half-blind with the car going light over the brow. Get the entry wrong and you'll either run wide off the back of the kerb or wash out into the gravel. From the exit of Campsa

the track drops away down the long descent towards Turn 10, and this is the second Straight Mode zone of the lap. With the 50/50 power split, managing the battery state down here is half the job. You can't just flatten the wings and hope, you've got to think about what the deployment looks like by the time you reach the braking zone. 

Sector 3: Turns 10 to 14 

Down the hill and into Turn 10, La Caixa, a slow left-hand hairpin and the second heaviest stop of the lap. This is where the Overtake Mode boost comes into play. Detection is back down the descent, so the move is to get a tow off Campsa, sit in the slipstream, deploy the manual override that has replaced DRS, and have a lunge on the brakes into La Caixa. With the 2026 cars able to follow more closely through the quick stuff, this should produce more genuine attempts than the old ground-effect cars ever managed. 

Out of La Caixa the lap tightens through the right-handers of Turns 11 and 12, a fiddly little complex where traction off the apex matters far more than entry speed. It's easy to lose a tenth here chasing a corner that doesn't reward bravery, and the twitchier 2026 cars will catch a few drivers out on the exit kerbs. 

Then comes the part that might surprise people. With the old chicane gone since 2023, the run through Turns 13 and 14 is now a fast, flowing finish rather than a stop-start shuffle. In a 2025 car the final corner was close to flat. In 2026, with roughly 15 to 30 percent less downforce on tap, it becomes a proper corner again, something drivers actually have to manage rather than breeze through. A clean exit from the last corner is worth a couple of tenths down the main straight, and it's the difference between holding a position and losing it into Turn 1 next time round. 

The race lap record sits at Oscar Piastri's 1:15.743 from 2025. The 2026 cars will be slower in absolute terms thanks to the downforce cut, but cleaner air, closer following and the energy-management game will create a strategic battle the old cars never offered. For a circuit everyone had written off as processional, that's no small thing.
